Red On vs Muse Surge: Two 200mg Caffeine Pouches Compared Honestly

In 30 Seconds

Red On and Muse Surge are the two strongest caffeine pouches on the UK market, and both deliver 200mg of caffeine per pouch. The differences sit everywhere else. Red On itemises its full stack on the label, 200mg caffeine plus 50mg beta alanine, costs 9.99 pounds for a tin of 20, and comes from a veteran owned coffee company. Muse Surge costs 6.99 pounds for a can of 20, comes in five flavours, and lists Alpha GPC, L-theanine and beta alanine in its ingredients without stating an amount for any of them. This guide compares the two head to head, and we declare our side up front: we make Red On.

Yes, We Make One of These

This comparison is written by Contact Coffee Co, the maker of Red On caffeine pouches. Read it with that in mind. The deal we offer in return is the same one we offered in our Neutonic pouches review: every number below comes from the manufacturer's own product pages or listings, checked on the date of publication, and where Muse does something better than us we say so plainly. Muse Surge is cheaper per pouch and comes in more flavours. Those are facts and you will find them below, stated without spin.

Same Caffeine Number, Different Label Philosophy

On caffeine alone this is a draw, and we will not pretend otherwise. 200mg is 200mg: roughly the caffeine of two to three cups of coffee, absorbed through the gum, in both products. If raw caffeine per pouch is your only criterion, either pouch does the job.

The separation is disclosure. The Red On label itemises every active: 200mg caffeine, 50mg beta alanine, a 250mg total itemised stack, with the full supplement facts panel printed on the tin. Muse Surge's ingredient list names Alpha GPC, L-theanine and beta alanine alongside its caffeine, which on paper is a broader stack than ours. But no amount is stated for any of the three. You know you are getting some Alpha GPC, some L-theanine, some beta alanine. You do not know how much, and an active without a stated dose cannot be evaluated. It might be a meaningful inclusion or it might be a label ingredient. We are straight about our own dose in the same spirit: Red On's 50mg of beta alanine is a stacking contribution, not the roughly 3.2g daily dose used in clinical saturation studies. The difference is that you can only make that judgement about our formula because we publish the number.

Price: Muse Wins Per Pouch

Muse Surge is 6.99 pounds for 20 pouches, which is 35p a pouch. Red On is 9.99 pounds for 20, which is 50p a pouch. That is a real 30 percent gap in Muse's favour and we are not going to argue you out of arithmetic. What the extra 15p a pouch buys with Red On is the itemised stack, the 50mg of beta alanine on the label, and a product from a company whose entire caffeine credibility is the point: the coffee roastery behind Red On! coffee, ranked among the strongest coffees in the world. Whether that is worth 15p a pouch is your call, and this page gives you the facts to make it.

Flavours and Format

Muse wins on range: Surge comes in Creamy Coffee, Cool Mint, Blue Razz, Tropical and Iron Brew. Red On comes in Coffee and Arctic Mint. Both use slim, discreet pouches in a 20 count container, sugar free and nicotine free. Wear time differs: Muse suggests 45 to 60 minutes per pouch, Red On is designed for 20 to 30 minutes. If you want a sweet shop flavour wall, Muse has it. If you want a pouch that actually tastes of coffee from a company that roasts coffee, that is the one we built.

Daily Limits, Side by Side

The number that governs both products is the same: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded in its 2015 scientific opinion on caffeine that intakes up to 400mg a day, and single doses up to 200mg, do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults. One pouch of either product is a 200mg single dose, sitting exactly at that single dose figure.

The two brands then diverge on daily guidance. Muse recommends one Surge pouch per day. Red On sets a single serving at one pouch and a hard maximum of two pouches in 24 hours, 3 to 4 hours apart, which places a full Red On day at the 400mg EFSA daily figure. Neither approach is wrong; they are different reads of the same guideline. Whichever pouch you choose, count every caffeine source you use that day, coffee and energy drinks included, and keep the total under 400mg. Both products are for adults 18 and over, and the standard cautions apply for pregnancy, heart conditions, hypertension and caffeine sensitivity. Our full evidence rundown is in Are Caffeine Pouches Safe.

Provenance: A Coffee Company vs a Pouch Company

Muse is a pouch company. Find Your Muse Ltd sells nicotine pouches from 6mg to 24mg, no nicotine pouches, and the energy range that Surge sits in, and it publishes lab reports for its products, which deserves credit. Red On comes from the opposite direction: Contact Coffee Company is a veteran owned coffee roastery that has supplied the UK military community for years, makes no nicotine products of any kind, and built the pouch as the next format for the same caffeine philosophy as its coffee.

That provenance was field tested the hard way. In July 2026 our co-founder Luke Dalton ran the GB Ultras Beacons Way 100, 103 miles across the Brecon Beacons, using Red On pouches as his primary caffeine source instead of gels. The full account is in his race report. We know of no equivalent public endurance test of Muse Surge. If where your caffeine brand comes from matters to you, that is the clearest difference on this page.

The Rest of the Muse Range, and Why Red On Is One Strength

Muse sells its energy pouches as a three step ladder: Focus at 70mg, Boost at 140mg, and Surge at 200mg. That ladder is a genuine advantage for someone who wants to start gently and work up, and it mirrors how the wider underdosed UK market is structured, with most rivals sitting between 50mg and 100mg per pouch. Red On deliberately does not offer a ladder. There is one strength, 200mg plus the 50mg of beta alanine, because the product was built for people who already know their caffeine tolerance and were doubling up weaker pouches to get a working dose. If you are new to caffeine pouches entirely, starting on a lighter pouch, or on half of whichever 200mg pouch you choose, is the sensible route, and our caffeine pouches UK guide covers how to work up safely.

It is also worth being clear about what the 200mg single dose means, because both brands anchor to it for a reason. The EFSA opinion identifies 200mg as the single dose figure that does not raise safety concerns for healthy adults, and separately notes it does not raise concerns when taken less than two hours before intense exercise. That is why 200mg has become the ceiling both of us build to: it is the largest dose you can put in one pouch while staying inside the healthy adult single dose guidance. Anything above it would be marketing over safety, and neither brand does it.

How the Two Feel in Use

The mechanics are the same in both: the pouch sits between lip and gum and the caffeine absorbs through the oral mucosa rather than the gut, which is why a pouch comes on faster than a coffee or a can. The stated wear times differ. Muse designs Surge for a 45 to 60 minute slow release. Red On is built for 20 to 30 minutes, a shorter, more front loaded delivery, then the pouch comes out and you get on with the session. Neither is objectively better; a night shift may suit the long slow release, a training session suits the shorter hit. Match the wear pattern to the job and, whichever you use, keep water nearby and rotate the placement across uses.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy Muse Surge if price per pouch is your deciding factor, you want a wide flavour choice, and undisclosed amounts of the secondary actives do not bother you. It is a legitimate 200mg pouch at a sharp price.

Buy Red On if you want every milligram itemised on the label, a stated 50mg of beta alanine rather than an unstated amount, a coffee flavour built by a roastery, a maker with no nicotine products anywhere in the business, and a pouch that has been proven over 100 miles of mountain ultra. Browse both flavours in the caffeine pouches collection, and if you are still weighing the whole category up, the caffeine pouches UK guide covers every brand on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is stronger, Red On or Muse Surge?

On caffeine they are equal: both deliver 200mg per pouch, the joint highest caffeine dose on the UK market. Red On carries the strongest total itemised stack at 250mg of named actives, 200mg caffeine plus 50mg beta alanine, while Muse Surge lists Alpha GPC, L-theanine and beta alanine without stating amounts.

Is Muse Surge cheaper than Red On?

Yes. Muse Surge is 6.99 pounds for 20 pouches, about 35p a pouch. Red On is 9.99 pounds for 20 pouches, 50p a pouch. Muse is roughly 30 percent cheaper per pouch.

How much caffeine is in a Muse Surge pouch?

200mg per pouch, which Muse describes as roughly three cups of coffee. Surge is the strongest of Muse's three energy strengths, above Focus at 70mg and Boost at 140mg. Muse recommends one Surge pouch per day.

What is in Muse Surge besides caffeine?

The ingredient list names Alpha GPC, L-theanine and beta alanine alongside caffeine, flavours and a cellulose base. Muse does not state the amount of any active except the caffeine, so the doses of the other three are not public.

What is in a Red On pouch?

200mg of caffeine and 50mg of beta alanine, both itemised on the label, with a food grade base of flavouring, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium chloride, maltodextrin, citric acid and sucralose. The full supplement facts panel is printed on every tin.

Do Red On or Muse pouches contain nicotine?

Neither product contains nicotine. Both are sugar free caffeine pouches for adults 18 and over. The wider Muse brand also sells nicotine pouches as a separate range; Contact Coffee Company makes no nicotine products of any kind.

How many 200mg pouches can I have in a day?

The EFSA 2015 opinion puts the healthy adult guideline at 400mg of caffeine a day and 200mg in a single dose, so two 200mg pouches is the absolute daily ceiling from pouches alone, and less if you also drink coffee. Muse recommends one Surge pouch per day; Red On allows a maximum of two, 3 to 4 hours apart.

Which has more flavours, Red On or Muse?

Muse. Surge comes in five flavours: Creamy Coffee, Cool Mint, Blue Razz, Tropical and Iron Brew. Red On comes in two: Coffee and Arctic Mint.

Is there a caffeine pouch that has been tested in endurance sport?

Red On has a public endurance test: co-founder Luke Dalton used Red On pouches as his primary caffeine source across the GB Ultras Beacons Way 100, a 103 mile ultra marathon, in July 2026, documented in his race report. We know of no equivalent public test of Muse Surge.
