It is a well made product with one honest catch: apart from the caffeine, none of the active doses are disclosed. We tested Surge against our own Red On caffeine pouches, which match the 200mg of caffeine and print every dose on the label. This review covers what Muse gets right, where it falls short, and which pouch suits which buyer.

What Muse Pouches Actually Are

Muse is a pouch house based in Leicester, trading as Find Your Muse Ltd. The brand runs three product lines under one roof: nicotine pouches from 6mg up to 24mg, nicotine free flavour pouches, and the energy pouch range this review is about. That matters for two reasons. First, the energy pouches themselves are completely nicotine free, tobacco free and sugar free, and it is worth saying that plainly because the shared branding confuses people. Second, if you care about who you buy from, you should know the same brand sells nicotine products through the same store. Contact Coffee does not and never will.

The energy range is clean in concept. Three strengths, one decision: Focus at 70mg is pitched at study and desk work, Boost at 140mg at gym sessions and long shifts, and Surge at 200mg at what Muse calls maximum power, aimed at endurance sport, night shifts and gaming marathons. Flavours run wide, including Creamy Coffee, Iron Brew, Tropical, Cool Mint and Blue Razz. Muse publishes lab reports and a clinical research page on its site, which is more than most pouch brands bother with, and the cans are made in Britain.

Muse Surge 200mg: What You Get

Surge is the flagship and the reason most people search for Muse. Each pouch carries 200mg of caffeine, which Muse describes as nearly three cups of coffee, alongside Alpha GPC, L-theanine and beta alanine. The pouch sits under the top lip and releases over 45 to 60 minutes. Muse recommends one Surge pouch per day. A can costs £6.99, and stockist listings sell it as 20 pouches per can, which works out around 35p a pouch. At that price it is one of the cheapest strong caffeine pouches in the UK, and cheaper per pouch than Red On. We will not pretend otherwise.

The formulation reads well on paper. Alpha GPC is a choline compound included for cognition, L-theanine is an amino acid that Muse’s own product page says prevents jitters and keeps the energy clean and controlled, and beta alanine is the tingling endurance ingredient lifters know from pre workout. The problem is the label stops at the caffeine number. Muse does not state how much Alpha GPC, how much L-theanine or how much beta alanine is in a pouch. Those three ingredients only do what the research says they do at meaningful doses, and without numbers a buyer cannot know whether Surge carries working amounts or a dusting for the ingredients panel.

How Pouch Caffeine Actually Works

Every pouch in this review works the same way, and it is the reason the format is growing. The caffeine absorbs through the lining of the gum and cheek rather than through the stomach, so it enters the bloodstream without waiting on digestion. That means a faster onset than coffee or a can, no sugar, no liquid sloshing around, and nothing to force down when your stomach is not cooperating. It also means dosing is exact: a pouch is a measured 200mg every time, where a strong coffee can swing wildly depending on the beans and the pour.

That last point is why pouches have found a serious audience beyond gamers and night shift workers. The flavour range is the widest in the UK pouch market. Publishing lab reports builds real trust. The price is aggressive. And Muse recommending just one 200mg pouch per day is responsible guidance that matches the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, the EU’s food safety regulator) position that 200mg in a single dose and 400mg across a day raise no safety concerns for healthy adults.

Where Muse Falls Short

Undisclosed doses

This is the big one. Red On prints 200mg caffeine and 50mg beta alanine on the tin, and the full ingredient list carries nothing else active. Surge names four actives and quantifies one. When two products cost real money and go under your lip, the one that shows its numbers deserves more trust. If Muse published the doses tomorrow, this review would get kinder.

The smoothed hit

Muse includes L-theanine specifically to soften caffeine, and its product page says exactly that: it prevents jitters and keeps energy controlled. For some buyers that is the selling point. Our experience is the opposite, and this is opinion rather than lab fact: theanine takes the edge off the very hit you bought a 200mg pouch for. Surge’s own use cases are night shifts, endurance sport and staying sharp when it matters, and those are the moments we want the full hit arriving fast, not a rounded off version of it. Red On leaves theanine out on purpose. Caffeine plus beta alanine, nothing in the pouch to slow it down.

Coffee flavour from a pouch company

Creamy Coffee is Muse’s attempt at the flavour we live in. It is a fair imitation of a milky brew. But there is something slightly backwards about a nicotine pouch house selling coffee flavour while an actual coffee company sells the same format with real coffee character. Red On’s Coffee flavour comes from a UK coffee company founded by Royal Marines that roasts and ships coffee every day. If you want the pouch to taste like the thing it replaces, buy it from people who make the thing it replaces.

Muse Surge vs Red On: Head to Head

Read the table honestly and the split is clear. Muse wins on price per pouch, flavour count and the existence of lighter tiers. Red On wins on disclosure, on total disclosed active load at 250mg per pouch against Surge’s 200mg, on an unsmoothed hit, and on being a coffee company’s coffee flavour rather than a pouch company’s impression of one. On caffeine alone they are level at 200mg, joint top of the UK market, whatever either brand’s marketing says. Muse’s blog calls Surge the world’s strongest caffeine pouch; on the caffeine number Red On matches it, and on disclosed actives Red On carries more.

Price and Value, Honestly

Muse is cheaper and we are not going to hide it behind a spreadsheet. At £6.99 with stockists listing 20 pouches per can, Surge lands around 35p a pouch. Red On is £9.99 for 20, which is 50p a pouch. Fifteen pence per pouch is a real difference over a heavy month, and if budget is your first filter, Muse wins that column outright.

What the extra 15p buys with Red On is specific: a label that discloses every active dose rather than one, an extra 50mg of beta alanine on top of the same 200mg of caffeine, a formulation deliberately free of the theanine that Muse includes to soften the hit, and a coffee flavour built by a company whose whole business is coffee. Whether that trade is worth it depends on which column you weight. Cheapest measured caffeine, Muse. Most transparent and hardest hitting per pouch, Red On. Both are honest positions; pick the one that matches yours.

Who Should Buy Which

Buy Muse if price per pouch is the deciding factor, if you want a 70mg or 140mg option to start light, or if flavour variety matters more to you than knowing the doses. It is a competent, well presented product and the lab reports are a genuine mark in its favour.

Buy Red On if you want the strongest fully disclosed pouch in the UK, the caffeine hit unsoftened, a real coffee flavour, and a brand that has never touched nicotine. Runners and lifters get the extra 50mg of beta alanine as a bonus; our co-founder ran a 100 mile ultra on these pouches instead of caffeine gels, which is the kind of field test no flavour catalogue can match.

The short verdict: Muse Surge is the best budget option in the UK strong pouch market and a fair product from a brand that at least publishes lab reports.
