Nicotine Free Pouches: The Complete UK Guide

By Luke Dalton. Updated 10 August 2026.
Nicotine free pouches are small oral pouches that sit between your upper lip and gum and contain no nicotine and no tobacco. Instead of nicotine, most deliver caffeine, and some add other active ingredients such as beta alanine or citicoline. The format is identical to a nicotine pouch: a slim white pouch, worn for 30 to 60 minutes, then binned. What changes is what is inside it.
Red On! Caffeine Pouches are in stock. 200mg caffeine and 50mg beta alanine per pouch, nicotine free and tobacco free. Coffee or Arctic Mint. £9.99 for a tin of 20.
What Nicotine Free Pouches Actually Are
The pouch format arrived in the UK through nicotine pouches, which grew out of Scandinavian snus culture. Snus itself is an oral tobacco product and its sale has long been banned in the UK, so what took off here was the tobacco free version: a plant fibre pouch carrying nicotine, flavouring and sweetener. Nicotine free pouches take the same delivery format and remove the nicotine entirely.
You will see them sold under several names. Caffeine pouches and energy pouches are the most common, because caffeine is the active ingredient in almost all of them. Some brands use the phrase nootropic pouches or focus pouches when the formula includes cognitive ingredients such as citicoline. And plenty of people simply search for nicotine free snus, which is technically a contradiction, since real snus contains tobacco, but everyone understands what is meant: the pouch experience without the nicotine.
A typical nicotine free pouch contains a bulking agent (usually microcrystalline cellulose, a plant based fibre), the active ingredients, flavouring, a sweetener such as sucralose, and a little salt. No leaf, no smoke, no vapour, nothing to light or charge. In the UK these products are sold as food supplements, which is why you will find an ingredients list and a daily limit printed on the tin.
How They Work
The mouth is a fast route into the bloodstream. The lining of your lip and gum, called the buccal mucosa, is thin and rich in blood vessels, so compounds held against it can be absorbed directly without first passing through the stomach and liver.
The best evidence for how quickly this works with caffeine comes from research on caffeinated chewing gum, the closest format that has been formally studied. A 2002 trial by Kamimori and colleagues at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics, compared caffeine from chewing gum against capsules in 84 healthy volunteers at doses of 50mg, 100mg and 200mg. Caffeine from the gum reached peak blood concentration in 44 to 80 minutes, against 84 to 120 minutes for capsules, because a large share of the dose was absorbed through the mouth rather than the gut. At the 100mg and 200mg doses, the total amount of caffeine delivered ended up broadly the same for both formats. Faster in, same total.
A pouch works on the same principle as that gum: the caffeine is released against the buccal tissue and absorbed where it sits. In practice that means the effect arrives sooner and more gradually than swallowing the same dose, and it arrives without asking anything of your stomach, which is exactly why endurance athletes have taken to the format. We wrote about running 103 miles on pouches instead of caffeine gels in our Beacons Way 100 race report.
The Safety Baseline
Because nearly every nicotine free pouch is a caffeine product, the sensible safety reference is the caffeine evidence base. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the EU's independent food safety regulator, published its Scientific Opinion on the safety of caffeine in 2015 (EFSA Journal 2015;13(5):4102), a 120 page assessment by its Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies. Its headline conclusions: single doses of up to 200mg and habitual daily intake of up to 400mg do not raise safety concerns for healthy adults. For pregnant women the opinion puts the figure at up to 200mg per day across all sources, and for children and adolescents at 3mg per kilogram of body weight per day.
Two practical points follow from that. First, count everything: your coffee, tea, energy drinks and pouches all draw from the same daily total. Second, dose per pouch matters enormously when you shop, because UK pouches range from 50mg to 200mg per pouch. One brand's single pouch is another brand's entire tin session. EFSA also notes that even a 100mg dose taken close to bedtime can delay and shorten sleep in some adults, so timing matters as much as total.
The Nicotine Free Pouches You Will Actually See in the UK
The UK market has moved fast since 2025 and now breaks into three rough camps. Strong single session pouches, lighter multi pouch formats, and zero caffeine pouches sold purely for the oral habit.
| Pouch | Caffeine per pouch | Other declared actives | Pouches per tin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red On by Contact Coffee | 200mg | 50mg beta alanine, fully itemised | 20 |
| Muse Surge | 200mg | Alpha GPC, L-theanine, beta alanine (amounts not declared) | 20 |
| Belter Energy | 96mg | Taurine, vitamin C (amounts not declared) | 15 |
| Muse Boost / Focus | 140mg / 70mg | Alpha GPC, L-theanine (amounts not declared) | 20 |
| Neutonic Focus Pouches | 50mg | 125mg Cognizin citicoline, B vitamins | 20 per puck |
Every figure in that table comes from the brand's own product pages or packaging. The pattern worth noticing is disclosure. Red On and Neutonic itemise every active ingredient with its dose. Muse and Belter declare the caffeine number but list their other actives without amounts. That does not make those products bad, but it does make them impossible to fully count against EFSA's guidance, and we think that matters in a category built around measured dosing. Our caffeine pouches UK pillar guide tracks the full market in more depth.
Stepping Away From Nicotine Pouches
A large share of the people searching for nicotine free pouches are current nicotine pouch users who want the ritual without the nicotine. Let us be precise about what a caffeine pouch is and is not in that situation. It is not a nicotine replacement therapy, it contains no nicotine at any strength, and it is not a licensed quit smoking product. If you want structured help stopping nicotine, the NHS (the UK's National Health Service) stop smoking services exist for exactly that.
What a caffeine pouch does offer is the format itself. The hand to lip habit, the pouch under the lip during a drive or a shift, the tin in the pocket. Users who switch keep all of that, and swap the active for one with a very different profile: caffeine is the most studied stimulant in the world, and EFSA's framework above gives you a clear, numbered way to manage your intake. Many of our Red On customers came to it from exactly this direction, which is also why every tin says nicotine free and tobacco free on the front in plain text.
One honest warning for switchers: mind the caffeine maths. If you were using several nicotine pouches a day and replace them one for one with 200mg caffeine pouches, you will blow through 400mg by lunchtime. Strong pouches are a one or two a day product. If you want to keep a higher pouch frequency, a lighter dose per pouch is the better fit, and we say that as the company selling the strong one.
The Legal Position in the UK
This is where 2026 changed the category. The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026 and brings nicotine products, including nicotine pouches, into a formal regulatory framework for the first time: an offence of selling nicotine products to under 18s, retail licensing powers, and an advertising and sponsorship ban for vaping and nicotine products that the government intends to bring into force from 1 June 2027.
Nicotine free pouches sit outside that framework because they contain no nicotine and no tobacco. In the UK they are regulated as food supplements: general food law, labelling rules and the standard caffeine warnings apply. Caffeine pouches are legal to buy and sell, and responsible brands in the category, ours included, market them to adults and label them as unsuitable for children and pregnant women in line with the EFSA guidance above.
How to Choose a Nicotine Free Pouch
Four checks sort the category quickly. First, the declared dose: a printed caffeine figure per pouch is the minimum, and a fully itemised active list is better. Second, the per pouch price: divide the tin price by the pouch count, because tin prices hide big differences. A £9.99 tin of 20 works out at 50p a pouch, while a £9.99 tin of 15 is 67p. Third, the dose you actually want: 200mg is a serious single hit and the right tool before a race, a night shift or a long drive, while 50mg to 96mg suits people who want several through the day. Fourth, who made it and why: this category has attracted white label brands with a logo and little else, so look for a company with a track record, a real formulation rationale and a way to contact them.
Where Red On Fits
Red On is our nicotine free caffeine pouch, built by Contact Coffee Co, a UK coffee company founded by Royal Marines. Each pouch carries 200mg of caffeine and 50mg of beta alanine, a 250mg active load that is fully itemised on the tin, with zero sugar, no tobacco and no nicotine. That is the joint highest caffeine dose per pouch on the UK market and the heaviest fully declared active stack. It comes in Coffee and Arctic Mint, 20 pouches to a tin, at £9.99, which is 50p a pouch.
We built it deliberately without L-theanine. Plenty of rivals include theanine to smooth the caffeine out; our experience field testing the product, including across a 103 mile ultramarathon, is that theanine blunts and slows the hit, and the whole point of a 200mg pouch is that it arrives. If you prefer a softer curve, a theanine blend from another brand is genuinely the better choice for you, and our comparison of the UK's nootropic and caffeine pouches lays out the options honestly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are nicotine free pouches?
Nicotine free pouches are small oral pouches worn between the upper lip and gum that contain no nicotine and no tobacco. Most are caffeine pouches, delivering a measured dose of caffeine through the lining of the mouth, and some add further ingredients such as beta alanine or citicoline.
Do nicotine free pouches contain tobacco?
No. Nicotine free pouches contain no tobacco leaf and no nicotine. The pouch itself is usually plant fibre such as microcrystalline cellulose, carrying the active ingredients, flavouring and sweetener.
Are nicotine free pouches legal in the UK?
Yes. Because they contain no nicotine or tobacco, they fall outside the Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 and are sold as food supplements under UK food law. Nicotine pouches, by contrast, are now regulated nicotine products under the 2026 Act.
What is nicotine free snus?
Nicotine free snus is a casual name for the same thing: a tobacco free, nicotine free pouch. Real snus is an oral tobacco product whose sale is banned in the UK, so the phrase really means a pouch that copies the snus format with a different active ingredient, usually caffeine.
How much caffeine is in a nicotine free pouch?
It varies more than most people expect. UK pouches run from 50mg per pouch at the light end to 200mg per pouch at the strong end. Red On carries 200mg of caffeine plus 50mg of beta alanine per pouch, which is the joint highest caffeine dose on the UK market.
Are caffeine pouches safe?
Caffeine pouches deliver caffeine, so the relevant guidance is EFSA's 2015 safety opinion: up to 200mg in a single dose and up to 400mg per day does not raise safety concerns for healthy adults. Count pouches alongside coffee, tea and energy drinks, and avoid them if you are pregnant, under 18 or sensitive to caffeine.
Do caffeine pouches help you quit nicotine?
Caffeine pouches are not a nicotine replacement therapy and are not a licensed quit product. What they offer is the same pouch format and ritual with caffeine as the active instead of nicotine. For structured support stopping nicotine, speak to your pharmacist or the NHS stop smoking services.
How long do you keep a pouch in?
Most brands recommend 30 to 60 minutes under the upper lip. The caffeine releases gradually against the gum for as long as the pouch is in place, so removing it earlier simply delivers less of the dose.
Can you swallow a nicotine free pouch?
No. Pouches are designed to be worn and then thrown away, not swallowed. Most tins include a compartment in the lid for used pouches until you find a bin.
What is the difference between caffeine pouches and energy pouches?
Nothing meaningful. Energy pouches is simply another retail name for caffeine pouches. Both describe a nicotine free pouch whose active ingredient is caffeine, sometimes alongside other declared actives.
Who should avoid nicotine free caffeine pouches?
Anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women beyond EFSA's 200mg daily caffeine guidance, and people sensitive to caffeine or advised by a doctor to limit it. A 200mg pouch is a full single dose in one go, so start lower if you are unsure of your tolerance.
